Navigating Political Asylum: A Belarusian Journalist's Journey to Lithuania
The Decision to Flee
My name is Irina, and I'm a 34-year-old journalist from Minsk, Belarus. In August 2020, the political climate in Belarus became increasingly dangerous for those of us in the media. After receiving threats due to my reporting on the protests, I made the hard decision to leave my country and seek asylum in Lithuania.
The Application Process
Arriving in Vilnius, I immediately applied for political asylum. The process was daunting and filled with uncertainty. The first major step was the credible-fear interview, which was scheduled a few weeks after my arrival. This interview was crucial; I had to convincingly demonstrate the genuine risk I faced if I returned to Belarus.
Challenges and Mistakes
One major mistake I made was not thoroughly preparing for the interview. I underestimated the level of detail required when recounting my experiences. Thankfully, I was able to provide additional evidence later, but it delayed the process significantly. Language was another barrier; while I could communicate in English, legal nuances were difficult to convey without an interpreter. I learned that having a professional interpreter can make a significant difference.
Additionally, I encountered a few scams targeting asylum seekers, promising expedited processes for a fee. Thankfully, I avoided these by consulting with established support networks and NGOs focused on helping migrants.
A Positive Outcome
Despite these challenges, my application was eventually approved. I was granted asylum, allowing me to start afresh in Lithuania. I’ve since found work as a freelance journalist, continuing to report on Eastern European affairs from a safer environment.
Tips for Fellow Asylum Seekers
1. Prepare Thoroughly: Before your credible-fear interview, list all incidents that demonstrate the danger you face. Collect any evidence you can, such as news articles, police reports, or witness statements.
2. Seek Legal Advice: Engage with NGOs or legal aid organizations that specialize in asylum cases. They can provide invaluable advice and often offer services for free or at a reduced cost.
3. Beware of Scams: If someone promises to expedite your application for a fee, be skeptical. Always verify their credentials and consult with trusted organizations before making any payments.
Looking Ahead
While the journey was fraught with stress and uncertainty, the support from the Lithuanian community and other migrants was invaluable. I hope my story encourages others to persist, despite the challenges, and highlights the importance of thorough preparation and cautious optimism.
