The Decision to Move
Hi, I'm Thandi, a 34-year-old registered nurse from Cape Town. Registration Exams: A Tough Start
The first major hurdle was getting recognized by the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ). I had to pass the Competence Assessment Program (CAP), which, frankly, was nerve-wracking. Shipping and Settling In
We underestimated the cost and complexity of shipping our belongings. We used a reputable moving company, but the final bill was startlingly high, around NZD 6,000. We also faced the challenge of finding a rental property that would accept us sight unseen. Luckily, we found a service that specializes in helping expats find housing, which was invaluable.
Tip 3: Consider selling bulky furniture and buying new in your destination country. It may be cheaper than shipping.
Wins and Challenges
Our biggest win has been the lifestyle New Zealand offers. The work-life balance is incredible, and our children are thriving in their new school environment. However, the initial months were tough. We missed our extended family, and adjusting to a new healthcare system took time.
